Database Engineer
(Singapore)

Responsibilities:

SUMMARY
Evaluates, designs or modifies, implements and maintains existing or proposed systems to databases

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Participate in on-call rotation and complete assigned checklist on a daily basis and delegate checklist responsibilities when on vacation or out-of-office on management sanctioned activities.
  • Review project and change management requests and assist in their implementation upon project approval.
  • Participate in, and constructively contribute to, design reviews.
  • Ability to produce costing and Return-on-Investment (ROI) information.
  • Make well founded, justified recommendations for long-term capacity increases based upon the periodic measurement of key system metrics.
  • Troubleshoot data integrity issues using reverse engineering.
  • Demonstrate the ability to analyze and understand an existing ETL process.
  • Creates ETL processes according to the business requirements.
  • Interact and coordinate with Systems Engineers when projects/issues requiring their work are in place.
  • Creates technical specifications for databases projects.
  • Stage, test, and document all new code implementations, database and RDBMS upgrades.
  • Work with functional project teams to execute test plans generated by the project team in conjunction with the Senior Database Engineers.
  • Maintain testing and debug databases for supported systems and applications.
  • Drive continuous improvement through trend reporting analysis and metrics management.
  • Establish new measurement systems and metrics for driving continuous improvement wherever possible.
  • Offer new ideas and suggestions for improvement. Identify and implement new practices and processes that are "best in field".
  • Identify creative ways to reduce cost by streamlining processes and systems (i.e. modification of responsibilities or consolidation of tasks, elimination of non-value added processes, or complete re-engineering of processes and systems).
  • Develop and maintain database and RDBMS documentation in order to keep our document library relevant to the current environment.
  • Stay abreast of current RDBMS technologies by participating in relevant training, conferences, and seminars.
  • Participate in the exchange of ideas and information within the department and colleagues in other Jabil facilities.
  • Ensure adherence to established Service Level Agreements (SLA) and Operations Level Agreements (OLA).
  • Escalate complex, difficult, or unusual situations to the reporting manager.
  • Escalate issues to applicable software vendors where necessary.
  • Ensure that received procedures and work instructions are efficient and not redundant.
  • Document failures and the corrective actions taken via participation in the Corrective Action process.
  • Ensure 100% adherence to all company policies and procedures (i.e. Health, Safety and Quality)
  • Maintain discretion and confidentiality in all areas pertaining to data and proprietary information, whether internal to Jabil or customer specific.
  • Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Maintain discretion and confidentiality in all areas pertaining to the IT systems.
  • Understand and embrace the business and IT strategic direction.
  • Adhere to all safety and health rules and regulations associated with this position and as directed by supervisor.
  • Comply and follow all procedures within the company security policy.

Requirements:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or computer related discipline required OR 4 to 5 years of relevant experience, including 2 to 3 years of database engineering experience. Must have an advanced knowledge of database engineering concepts. Must have basic knowledge of operating systems. Must be familiar with Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS), Structured Query Language (SQL), and database design fundamentals. Platform education – formal or informal – Oracle (Versions 10g and above) and SQL Server (Versions 2000 and above). Operating system platform education – formal or informal – Linux and Windows Server (Versions 2003 and above). Knowledge of Networking (TCP/IP), storage (RAID types and SAN arrays), and server hardware fundamentals. Knowledge of transforming logical models to a physical data model. Ability to install and configure a selected platform. Familiarity with enterprise level maintenance and management tools. Understanding of how how security impacts applications. Understanding of replication and high availability (HA) technologies.
LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
First class customer service and communication skills – verbal and written. Ability to follow written and verbal directions in the English language.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Individual will be required to use computer keyboards or other equipment for extended periods of time.
Individual may be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision for reading and studying technical materials and use of computer monitor screens a great deal of the time. Specific physical abilities required by the job may include walking, reaching carrying and lifting up to 25 lbs, with some occasional lifting up to 50lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Individual’s primary workstation is located in the office area, with some time spent on the manufacturing floor. The noise level in the work environment ranges from low to moderate.
